The season of the Níspero (Loquat) has arrived!

Spring in the Axarquía gives us one of its most precious treasures: the níspero. At El Epicureo, we eagerly await this season to let our pastry creativity run wild… but that’s not all! This year, we took a little break from the ovens to spend some quality time in Sayalonga with the family.

But wait, what exactly is a Níspero?

If you’ve just arrived in the region, you’ve likely noticed clusters of bright orange fruit decorating the valleys of the Axarquía. The Japanese Loquat (its scientific name) is the very first stone fruit of the spring.

  • The Taste: A perfect balance between sweetness and a refreshing hint of acidity. The flesh is juicy and firm, and the velvety skin peels away effortlessly.
  • How to Enjoy It: Most locals eat them fresh right off the tree. However, because they are naturally rich in pectin, they are perfect for jams, syrups, and liqueurs.
  • In the Kitchen: We love them in pastries! They pair beautifully with smooth creams or even in sweet-and-savory dishes with local goat cheese or roasted meats. Since it’s a delicate fruit that doesn’t travel well, it is the ultimate “kilometer zero” local product.

Sayalonga: A Festival at the Heart of Our Roots

Did you know we are located right at the gateway to the “Loquat Capital”? Sayalonga, a stunning white village nestled in the Axarquía, celebrated the 40th anniversary (XL Edition) of the “Día del Níspero” this Sunday, May 3rd. As lovers of local produce, we had a blast wandering the streets of this vibrant town.

Save the Date: This traditional festival happens every year on the first Sunday of May. Mark your calendars now for next year!

This 40th edition was more than just a food festival; it was a true celebration of local merit:

  • The “Nísperos de Honor”: Every year, awards are presented at local, provincial, and regional levels to honor influential people and institutions. This year, the Municipal Women’s Information Center (CMIM) was among the honorees.
  • The Producer’s Prize (Premio al Cosechador): A highlight of the day that rewards the hard work of our valley’s farmers.
  • Art in Focus: Beyond drawing contests for children, adults participated in painting competitions, turning the village into an open-air gallery.
  • Tastings & Atmosphere: Over 3,000 kilos of loquats were distributed, alongside artisanal jams and Muscat wine, all set to the rhythm of live bands and DJs in the square!

From the Tree to Your Plate: Our Signature Loquat Tart

Back at our ovens with heads full of memories and the season’s best fruit, we’ve officially relaunched our Incredible Loquat Tart.

It’s our way of keeping the party going! A crispy pastry crust and a light cream that enhances the unique flavor of Sayalonga loquats. Because this fruit doesn’t travel, our tart is a gastronomic experience you can only have right here with us.

And this is only the beginning… The excitement of the festival gave us so many ideas! We are so inspired by this year’s harvest that we’ll likely be creating more loquat-themed surprises very soon. Stay tuned!

FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About Nísperos

When is the best time to eat loquats (nísperos)?

The season is short and intense! It usually starts in April and ends in June, with the peak of flavor in May. This is the perfect time to enjoy them, as they are at their sweetest and juiciest.

Why aren’t these tarts or fruits available year-round?

The loquat is an extremely fragile fruit. It does not tolerate long transport or long-term cold storage. It is an exclusively seasonal and local specialty. We only work with the fruit when it is picked at peak maturity in the orchards neighboring Sayalonga.

Are nísperos good for your health?

Yes, absolutely! They are very healthy, rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins (especially A and C). They are also known for their diuretic properties and are low in calories, making them the perfect healthy treat for sunny days.
