In the heart of Cómpeta, El Epicúreo celebrated this year’s festival of Saint Honoratus (San Honorato in Spanish) with an initiative as delicious as it was playful. For one week, our bakery transformed into a real playground… where every loaf of bread could hide a treasure.
But before looking back at this magical week, let’s take a moment to discover who this famous saint is… and why he is so important to bakers.
Who is Saint Honoratus, the Patron Saint of Bakers?
Saint Honoratuds was a 6th-century Bishop of Amiens who became the patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs. According to tradition, when he was named bishop, a miracle occurred: a wooden bread peel planted into the ground transformed into a tree in full bloom.
This symbol of transformation—from the simple to the wonderful—resonates perfectly with the baker’s craft: transforming flour, water, and sourdough into something living, nourishing, and deeply human.
That is why every year, on May 16th, artisan bakers celebrate their patron saint… and their savoir-faire.

The Saint Honoré Cake: An Icon of French Pastry
It is impossible to talk about Saint Honoré without mentioning the famous Saint Honoré cake

CCreated in the 19th century in Paris, this dessert is a tribute to the patron saint. It typically consists of:
- A puff pastry base
- Cream-filled choux buns
- Crunchy caramel
- A light cream (Chantilly or pastry cream)
At El Epicúreo, we put our own spin on this tradition with our individual, crunchy, and delicately sweet versions… which became the true stars of our special week.
A Tradition Revisited: The Bread Treasure Hunt
From May 11th to 16th, 2026, we wanted to revive an old tradition: hiding little surprises inside the bread to spread joy and togetherness.
Every day:
- Artisanal loaves came out of the oven with a well-hidden secret.
- Inside, a small trinket could turn a simple purchase… into a sweet reward!
- The lucky winners walked away with a complimentary Saint Honoré tart.
The excitement was palpable with every slice of bread… a simple moment turned into a shared moment of suspense.
⚠️ And of course, we reminded everyone to slice their bread carefully, as the treasures were small… but precious!
A Week Full of Smiles
Awas a moment of pure joy, for them as much as for us.
The village of Cómpeta truly caught the buzz:
- Regulars came back to try their luck again.
- Curious newcomers stepped in to soak up the atmosphere.
- And everyone shared that same childlike excitement.
A bakery, yes, but above all, a place centered around community.

The Grand Finale on 16th May 2026
The highlight of the week? Bien sûr, the day of Saint Honoré itself.
This time, the treasure wasn’t just any ordinary trinket… it was the figurine of the Saint himself.
The challenge:
- Find the Saint trinket in your bread.
- Bring it back to the bakery.
- Walk away with a €10 gift voucher!
And our grand winner was found! A lucky neighbor, who just came in to pick up his daily bread… and walked out with much more than expected.

Thank you, Cómpeta 💛
This week wouldn’t have been the same without you.
Thank you to everyone who:
- Participated
- Smiled
