Pink Ribbons, Autumn Flavours, and Local Traditions
October might just be our favourite month here at El Epicureo. After the long, sun-soaked summer of the Axarquía, the air finally cools, the light softens, and the landscape begins to change. The scent of roasted chestnuts drifts through the streets, markets brim with autumn produce, and the bakery ovens work overtime filling the air with warmth and spice.
A Month for Awareness and Community
October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when pink ribbons appear in windows and on lapels across the Axarquía and the world. It’s a time for solidarity, reflection, and care, a reminder to look after ourselves and each other.
To mark the month, we’ve created a special pink tartlet made with almonds cooked in pink sugar, as bright and cheerful as the message it represents. It’s our small way to celebrate strength, hope, and the power of community.

The Flavours of Autumn Arrive
Each bite is a taste of the Axarquía: chestnuts from nearby hillsides, squash from local farms, and a little El Epicureo magic.
As the mornings turn crisp, our kitchen fills with the flavours that make autumn irresistible: butternut squash, pumpkin, chestnuts, and spices. This season, we’re especially proud of our new brioche with chestnuts and butternut squash — soft, buttery, and rich with seasonal goodness.

Local Life in October
October also brings a buzz of local traditions and celebrations that make life in our region so special.
Early in the month, the hills around the Axarquía start to come alive with the olive harvest. Families and farmers gather to collect the first green fruits of the season, and the air carries that unmistakable scent of freshly pressed oil — golden, peppery, and utterly Andalusian.
Then, on 12 October, Spain celebrates Día de la Hispanidad, a national holiday that fills the plazas with flags, laughter, and family gatherings. It’s a day for coffee on the terrace, a sweet treat, and maybe an extra-long lunch — or even ordering something special from us for your family reunion.
And as the month draws to a close, we look forward to one of our favourite local events — the Fiestas de la Castaña in Alcaucín, just up the road from us. This charming festival celebrates the humble chestnut with music, dancing, and, of course, endless ways to enjoy the season’s star ingredient. It’s exactly the kind of tradition that inspires our baking at El Epicureo.
A Hint of Halloween
Of course, October wouldn’t be complete without a few Halloween treats! We’re already dreaming up spooky bakes, from chocolate-filled surprises to ghostly decorations. Keep an eye on our social media for sneak peeks — we promise something sweetly sinister will appear before the month’s end. 🎃
